Braseiros e Canaviais is inspired by images, poetic and aesthetic, of rural figures coming from the cane fields of the interiors and figures present in communities and slums in the great urban centers of Brazil.

What precedes the cutting of sugar cane in the cane fields of different regions of the country? These are the “burnings”, often used as a strategy to facilitate the harvest of sugarcane.

What precedes the great “fires” in the urban centers of Brazilian cities? They are point-blank killings, also used as burning human files.

Brazier means, in this context, burning straw, breathing soot, burning the body-stem-cane, making ember and sharpening sickles and machetes for socio-political-cultural claims. These are images that, figuratively, dancers-interpreters refer to issues that concern, for example, social claims such as the right to housing and against the latifundio.

Traditional figures, present in the imagination of popular culture, such as the caboclo-de-lança, the healers, cangaceiros and brincantes are transformed into contemporary figures, such as bóias-frias, badameiros, social and political activists, who have the “brazier” as a metaphor , present issues such as the landless movement, ethnocide, cultural expropriation, among others.

In “Braseiros e Canaviais”, the interpreters dialogue with movements and body games from the imagination of traditional Brazilian popular manifestations, with movements and games from contemporary dance that touch on universal human issues and expressions, present in current socio-political-cultural conflicts .

GRADES:

Sugarcane - Sugarcane plantation. Sugarcane is a word that refers to a large amount of a certain grass, naturally found in flooded areas (swamps or swamps, for example), flooded depressions or river estuaries. Common cane (Phragmites australis) naturally occupies humid areas, including ponds, ditches, dikes, swamps and estuaries and swamp areas. Upon drying, such grass gives rise to a dry straw that degrades, acting as a filtering agent for impurities.

In addition to this natural function, straw from cane used (or still does) to be important for many local economies, being traditionally harvested in the winter months and used for roofing houses. But, nowadays, straw plays an important role in water treatment processes, in particular artificially grown canes, which are used in gray water clean-up processes (a name that receives any residual water, of a non-industrial nature, originated from domestic processes such as washing dishes, clothes or bathing). The plant also has another important ecological role, which can be used to filter pollution and also absorb pesticides and similar products, when planted around buildings and highways.

Phragmites australis are showy plants throughout the year. In late spring and early summer, they are green and lush, with magenta flowers appearing in late summer. Sugarcane species

vary depending on the water levels in the environment, climate, seasonal variations, and the nutrient and salinity status of the water.

The humid environment of the cane fields is also home to a wide variety of living things, especially insects and their predators, birds such as the Great Burrow (Botaurus stellaris - of the heron family) or the Nightingale (Acrocephalus scirpaceus), in addition to small mammals , like the European beaver. Sugarcane fields with water levels at or below the surface during the summer are often more complex in terms of biodiversity and botany. Reeds and similar plants generally do not grow in water with acidic Ph, and therefore, in these situations, cane fields are replaced by vegetation. Although common cane is the fundamental component of cane fields, cane fields can occur with other similar types of plants, but these are more rare in nature.

Popularly, the term is more used to refer to large rural areas where they are occupied by sugar cane, a plant used commercially in the extraction of various derived products, mainly alcohol used in the production of automotive fuel, or else, as source for the production of domestic sugar.

The effects of fire on the natural environment

Naturally occurring forest fires are an integral and necessary part of many ecosystems (as in the Cerrado), and the organisms that make up the communities in these environments have adaptations to face and even take advantage of it.

Thus, for example, the heat of the fire may be the necessary factor for certain seeds to germinate, taking advantage of the fact that, in the burnt landscape, competition between species will be less and these seeds will have greater access to light, water and nutrients. In many ecosystems where grassy fields predominate, fire is also an agent in the recycling of nutrients.

The occurrence of forest fires is not limited to tropical regions; these phenomena are also common in the Mediterranean climates of Europe, the United States, North Africa, South Africa, Chile and Australia; and in areas of boreal forest, such as Alaska, Canada, Finland and Russia.

Natural fires happen periodically in the Cerrado, and some seeds only germinate after the fire has passed.

Most of the fires, however, occur due to human action, for various reasons: cleaning pastures, preparing crops, deforestation, manual harvesting of sugarcane, vandalism, falling balloons, land disputes and social protests, among others . Each year, Brazil loses about 15 thousand km2 of natural forests due to fires. In South America, 40 thousand km2 are burned per year.

Burning organic matter produces water, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides, hydrocarbons and particulate matter. As these products are released into the atmosphere, fires cause damage to people's health. Smoke and fire lead to accidents and loss of property and harm aviation and transport. When fire escapes control, it affects public and private property (forests, fences, transmission lines and telephone lines, etc.).

Fires totally alter, or even devastate, ecosystems: they destroy fauna and flora; by killing soil microorganisms, they make it poorer; calcining their surface, they reduce the penetration of water in the subsoil. From a broader point of view, fires are responsible for changes in the chemical composition of the atmosphere and, by extension, have a negative influence on the planet's climate changes, contributing to the increase of the greenhouse effect and, therefore, to global warming .

Latifúndio - is a term originating in the Latin language, a combination of lātus (meaning broad, spacious, extensive) and fundus (farm) and which currently serves to refer to large-scale rural property, consisting mostly of uncultivated land and / or exploited with low productivity techniques. In ancient Rome, "latifundio" was the great agrarian property of an aristocrat, whose production was based on slave labor.

In the 16th century, amid the maritime explorations of the Iberian peoples, the latifundium gained new impetus, with the addition of a striking feature, in addition to all mentioned above: the export monoculture. This format of land exploration has influenced, in an indelible way, the evolution of societies in practically the entire American continent in the last 500 years, including the Brazilian one and, nowadays, it is usually subject to numerous criticisms.

Landless Movement - The History of the struggle for land - Brazil is one of the countries with the highest concentration of land in the world. In our territory, there are the largest latifundia. Concentration and unproductiveness have historical roots, which go back to the beginning of Portuguese occupation in this territory in the 16th century. Combined with monoculture for export and slavery, the form of occupation of our lands by the Portuguese established the roots of social inequality that affects Brazil until nowadays.

Land Law - In 1850, the same year as the abolition of the slave trade, the Empire enacted the law known as the Land Law, which consolidated the perverse land concentration. It is there that the origin of a trivial practice of the Brazilian latifundium is found: land grabbing - or the appropriation of vacant lands through forged documentation - that regulated and consolidated the model of large rural property and formalized the bases for social inequality and that we know today.

Popular Resistances - In the central countries of the capitalist system, the democratization of access to land, land reform, was one of the main policies to unlock social and economic development, producing raw material for the nascent modern industry and food for its workers.

We are a family owned and operated business.

In Brazil, not even the political and economic transformations for the development of capitalism were able to confront the concentration of land. Over five centuries of latifundio, popular struggles and resistance were also fought. The struggles against exploitation and, therefore, against the captivity of the land, against expropriation, against expulsion and against exclusion, mark the history of the workers. Peasant resistance manifests itself in several actions and, in this march, participates in the process of transforming society.

We are a family owned and operated business.

Since the middle of the 20th century, new features and forms of organization have been created in the struggle for land and in the struggle for land reform. In different regions of the country, continuous conflicts and events formed the peasantry at the beginning of the second half of the last century.

“The dictatorship implemented a more concentrated and exclusive agrarian model, installing selective agricultural modernization, which excluded small agriculture”.

The military regime was doubly cruel and violent towards the peasants.

We are a family owned and operated business.

On the one hand - as with all the Brazilian people - the peasants were deprived of the rights of expression, assembly, organization and demonstration, imposed by the truculence of the National Security Law and Institutional Act nº 5. On the other hand, the dictatorship implemented an agrarian model more concentrated and exclusive, installing a selective agricultural modernization, which excluded small agriculture, driving rural exodus, the export of production, the intensive use of poisons and concentrating not only the land, but the financial subsidies for agriculture.
